Lights flickered in the valley below. It was cold despite the still air. They waited. In the far distance, Brill's clock tower tolled three times.
Kunikiko was counting, almost under her breath: "Wan. Too. Free. Fur. Fi'e." She stopped. "F'ie."
Vivimord raised an eyebrow. "There seem to be far more than five encampments, Matron."
Kunikiko shook her head. "Not dese camps. F'ie o' dem pit lords." She pointed to each in turn.
Kayne was still studying the scrolls, but looked up then. He reached over to Bregdark's vest and pulled out the pocket watch. He counted on his fingers. "Midnight and twenty, plus the two and forty, minus the six, divide by the four. So that makes three more hours until we strike."
Honnete groaned. "Three more 'ours? But we'll get 'ungry!"
Bregdark sighed, stretched, and then sat down cross-legged. "So we wait, yes."
After a time, the others settled in as well. Silence hung in the air.
Bregdark began to whistle, tunelessly at first. Bregdark's forked tongue darted around his ragged lips rapidly, and the sound that emerged from the sharp teeth was low and mournful.
Kaylia stood up and began to sing:
Dawn's promise kept
With battle calls,
Blood will spill
Outside these walls.
For now we wait
Our forces joined.
Lives will end
As war is coined.
In Shadow's grasp
The Light will die
Its final gasp
They returned to silence after that, and waited together. Soon enough, the pink fingertips of dawn heralded the advent of battle.
