((Quick 'n' Easy RP thread!)) ((Preservation from Umbral GuildPortal))

((I really miss the Umbral Origins and related threads from the FM forum. I was thinking about a new thread that we could open up for people to post in. Here's the idea:

The Umbral Advent Calendar

This is a calendar created by Raels and found in her workshop. Much like advent calendars in our world, on this calendar, each date is marked by a little box that can be opened. In our world, these boxes contain chocolate. In Raels' calendar, each box is a bit of a surprise.

Below you'll find the draft opening post I plan to put up on the FM forum, followed by a couple of example entries.

Each entry should contain:

DATE: Apparently Azeroth uses the human calendar including names for months that make no sense for Azeroth. So, pick a date like July 15 or February 29.

ALMANAC TEXT: Some but not all calendar boxes have more than just a date -- they indicate a few words for well-known holidays and events and celebrations -- from the ones that Blizzard created such as "Peon's Day" (September 30) and Midsummer Fire Festival (culminating on July 5) -- but also to the weird ones that Raels would find interesting enough to write on her calendar, such as "Cut Down A Treant Day" and "Ramstein the Gorger's Birthday" and "Tea Party with Mr. Pinky Night."

INSIDE THE BOX: A description of what happens when you open that day's box -- such an item you find in the box (ranging from actual chocolate to strange engineering items or weird things that Raels' has found in her travels through Azeroth and Outland), or a trap that goes off when the box is opened.

So each entry just consists of those three things.

He hesitates. "But that room hasn't been opened in years," the innkeeper tells you. "I really shouldn't rent it to you."

Nonetheless you reach out for the key held in his chubby fingers.

"You say it is your last room, and I require a room for the night," you say. "If that is the only room that you have, then I'm taking it."

You head up the stairs before the innkeeper can articulate his protest. On the third floor, down a dark corridor, you find the room marked with a 13. The key does not turn easily, but you are weary and determined. You open the door.

Perhaps that was a mistake? Dust billows out in sheets, and the musty smell is overpowering. Peering through the gloom, you make out tables piled precariously with a vast array of mechanical objects: Gears, springs, sharp spikes, wood shavings, etched wires, glowing power cores, arcanite bearing balls, odd tubes and cylinders, and more.

While most of the rooms' items seem haphazardly placed, you spy something special on the bed: twelve long objects seem to have been laid with special care. Made of wood, each tablet has various carvings and boxes and chambers. Ornate script labels each tablet with the name of a month, as well as the caption, "Umbral Advent Calendar."

A sense of foreboding grips you as you examine the tablets more closely. But nonetheless you cannot help but satisfy your curiosity. You reach for one of the boxes at random.

Date: November 5

Label: Goblinish Gunpowder Day

Opening the box causes a tiny gun to extend itself, pointing straight at you. A hissing sound erupts, and a tiny fuse pops and begins to burn. But instead of a bullet firing, a small banner emerges and unfurls. It is labeled with the word "Gotcha!"

Date: April 22

Label: St. Bregdark's Day

A carving of a strange Forsaken with no jaw and large eyes decorates this box. His hat appears to be a tall white mitre. The switch to open the door is made from his nose. Inside is a bleached jawbone, perfectly smooth, with long and sharp teeth. A few words are scrawled behind it. "He doesn't need it," is all that's written there.

Label: Ashea Wednesday
Description: ...heavens know why this holiday is on a Tuesday, but behind the flap is a small, pink feather tied, via a length of thin thread to a replica bomb with tiny feet and a face with a wicked grin on it...or at least, it could be a replica.

Date: 20th November {{St Martin's Day in our calendar.}}

Label: Silky's birthday

This box is decorated with what appears to be a small scrimshankcarving on ivory, perhaps a tusk. The carving shows a chargingboar.

The box, when opened, contains several stale bread rolls and a recipe for making croissants.

The box is inlaid with swirls of lighter wood to depict a burst of flame. Inside you find a recipe for Dragonbreath Chili, a flask of what looks like Oil of Immolation, and a bundle of matches. Tied to the matches is a note that reads “Have a blast!”

2nd of September
Kull Waxing Day

You open the box to reveal a small dried up hunk of kodo meat. It is bruised as though it had been struck by a large fist. Bits of dirt ground into the meat remind you of the Gold Road in the Barrens.

The box that fits in between March the 27th and 29th has no label. Instead there is a drawing (or is it a drawing.. it looks horribly real and.. wait, did it just MOVE?) of a serpent. It is blurry around the edges and its eyes stare at you with shining, white gems, twinkling like mother-of-pearl.

As you slowly open the small drawer that the box is nothing happens. At first. Then black smoke start leaking out of it, slowly at first but then more eagerly. The smoky tendrils move towards your hand, caressing your fingers, your wrist and then your lower arm...

...and you push the box shut, heart beating hard, not wanting to think about what might have happened if you left it open any longer.

You'd better look for another box and forget all about this one.

January 2nd
The Day After New Year's Day!

Try as you might, you cannot get the tiny door to this box to open. You tug and tug on the small handle, but it seems too slick to get a grip on. Too late you realize that the door was coated in a contact hallucinogen. You decide you don't want to open that door anyway, as the magic sock goblins under the bed probably have more interesting things to show you.
